According to his daughter, Charles Haywood Lewallen bought this guitar in New York on his way home from the war. (The date of his discharge is 13 Feb 1919). He had lost all but his thumb and index finger on his left hand but still wanted to learn to play the guitar. He used a steel to depress the strings. His guitar was a prize possession.
