Dog-napping thwarted

Burg.
Dear Haywood = Deer.
Just got home from school and thought I would write you a line or two, as I had promised Sun. night and before.
Am as weak as a cat for just had a big fight with Abe. He was calling me names so I tryed beating up on him And that is about all the good it did me too. for he got up and ran and begin as bad as before. Anyway I'm not going to let any of the kids get the best of me if I can help it. Before they've always got away with every thing.
How is Doug?
Well this is after supper and milking is finished.
You will have to read between the lines for Margaret feels real "snoppy" etc tonight so I've already found out. So I see you will have to read between the lines etc this time.
I think I am going to stay in town a couple or three days the last of the week. With a women just for company at nights and go to school of course. She said some thing about it to Dad, I sure am afraid I won't know how to act.
We are going to have a foot ball game here with Chihalis Friday and I be it will sure be some game to. And also our debating team will debate against Kalama team at K_______ Friday night and I'm going too. Muriel and I have made up our minds to go on the train and be as independent as we can. Ted her brother said we could go with him but he seems to have it all maped out for mo. and we don't agree.
Dad just weighed one of our turkeys and they weigh about 16 lbs. Gee! the strangest thing happened this evening. Sport was down by the barn when some young fellow came into the yard, left his car at fork of road and came as far as water trough and called Sport, turned around and walked down the road as fast as he could with the dog following. The kids ran down and got him. the fellow beat it in a car. Thought maybe he was trying to kid-nap him.
Those two girls that were over to our place Sun. gave me more complements for you (etc.)'
Well will close for this time.
As ever
Sue

Susie to Haywood

Post marked Castle Rock, WA, 1921
Addressed to "Mr. Charles H. Lewallen, Box 1148 Portland, Ore.
Castle Rock,
Friday
Dear Haywood,
Seems as though I haven't heard from you for a month. I will try writing again. Excuse this pen as I have to write with one point.
Did not go to school today. "felt rotten"
Dad is out cutting wood today. Ma's at the bar and I am alone with the kids. They about run me wild after being away from noise for three weeks. I'd could just pull them to pieces it seems.
Dad has been as cross as an old bear lately. He hit ma on the head the other day. She slapped him right back. Then he kicked her. He's sore now and won't speek. I've been making it pretty good though. Am going over to Mrs. Otts to stay again Mon. I think. If Guy (her brother) goes to work. I sure seems funny to get up at 5:30 or 6 here when at eight over town -- You know I don't like sleep. I am always sleepy sence I am home.
Doug hasn't been down for a couple of days. I think he is staying with old fat that lives under the bridge. I know who that Bill is that was up at Doug when Marg and went up after the buggy. He lives with old fat. I saw him there. He was the fellow that went and left Doug alone when he was sick.
Where is Al working? [in pencil] Just can't stand that pen another minute. Doug said he was going to have Albert come down and help him cut wood.
Well, must ring off.
Love, Susie

Dearest Haywood
Recieved your letter of the 14th this evening and will answer you although I have sent you three letters already today.
Haywood, what makes you say such thing? as: "As you will do in the future." meaning go with Lysons.
You ask me in every letter if I love you. Of course I do or I wouldn't have promised as I did. What a lot of fun one would have with one they did not care for.
Well dear must ring off for now as the light bum and I can hardly see.
Kisses
Dad is making sausage tonight, and cross as a bear so I beat it off to bed. Please excuse the scrib, etc.
Dad said he wasn't going to give us any of the turkey money. I could just bawl every time I think of it. "There's my coat. Such is life. Eh"?
They are going to have the turkey shoot Sunday. Dad gave Margaret the job of selling cider. She's as mad as a wet hen.
Encrease in the family this evening a baby calf. "Not so bad."
Well it is about 8 'o and I am real sleepy.
"Already?" So must ring off
Love and kisses
Sue

Sat night
Oct. 22, 1921,
Dear Haywood
Well thought I would try writting again. As I haven't gotten answers for my last two letters. We have been looking for you every Sat. and Sun. for the last month or so. Why haven't you come down?
Abe and I wrode Ginger and Dolly up the Dougs this afternoon but didn't see him as another man came to the door; and said that, "Mr. McKay was very sick and we could not see him. When Abe saw Dad I guess he was real excited for Dad said he said Doug was about dead. and wasn't expected to live. Of course Dad will have to go up to see him in the morning, if he doesn't go hunting. Say! If you don't come down before long you won't get to go hunting with Dad for the season will soon be closed. Dad has got about a dozen and half birds this year.
We had the foot ball game with Kelso Friday and we "Won" It was not a very big score though 3 to 7. We really didn't expect to win because this was so many of the kids first year playing. Every one of the kids are layed out. They celebrated last night. Every one of them was stewed to the "eye-brow" "Swimming in the streets, etc." Dunbar was not around.
I have the tooth-ache "again" tonight and am just about crazy. Believe I'll pull my teeth and get a set of false. "Not."
I am staying home real good lately and have started to read Students Reference Work from Vol. 1-7. "Not so bad Eh?"
We have had three days vacation during teachers Institute and I sure hate to start back to school Monday.
What are you studying now? Still think of being a R.R. Clerk? When Doug was down last time he was telling us you looked like a million bucks in your new suit. I thought perhaps you would be down before it was all worn out.
Well must ring off and study Prehistoric Greece awhile. Answer real soon.
As ever,
Sue

Thurs. night
Dear Haywood
Well as I promised I would write to-night I might just as well start now as any-time, while I am waiting for Abe to help me milk.
Dear little Floyd Johnson and Dad have just left for the city. He thought he would stay here while Dad went to town until the last minute when Margaret told him Earl was comming over. Then he rushed away with Dad and left me heart-broken and dissapointed of course. Ha!Ha!
Doubt if you can read this for imagine me trying to write on the porch with Marg, Abe, Charles, Dot, Doris and the rest yelling who your writing to? Bet I know etc. Guessing every one from My Uncle to Harding.
I have milked, Earl has been here and it is time I were in bed 9 'o A regular chicken at going to roost Eh! Ha! Ha. Well, must quit this foolishness. But even now I can't think. I've sat here half an hr. trying to think of something else to write about.
I Guess Doug has been down to see you by this time.
How did you like your first day of school. I sure dread Mon. if any day.
Well about my birthday I think if you get my watch fixed and what I've had I shouldn't ask for any thing else.
I suppose this has taken about enough of your time trying to read so I will ring off. Hoping to hear from you real soon
Love
Sue
(over)
This is Friday morn. They are going to thrash here today and Marg and I can't go to Kelso. Boo!Hoo!
This morn. Floyd ask me if I ever went to dances. oh I said ever wonce in a while. Well he said if you ever want to go to Toledo or Gohle just tell me Oh hit me. surprised. I'll say. Of course I'd let him know.

Dearest Haywood.
Busy as the dickens yesterday so could not write you. Am in Ancient History class so please excuse the scrib, spelling, etc. I suppose you are getting tired of this old "Please excuse scrib, etc." Dad gave $50. to Ma of turkey money. Margaret just told me. I see where I can have a coat yet. also a pair of shoes, which I need badly. Well can't think of much to write about.
Love and Kisses
Sue

Susie to Al Lewallen

(Burg.)
Dear friend Al.
Dad recieved your card this eve. I suppose by this time Haywood has told you what I wrote him about Doug. He is still very sick. Dad has been going up twice a day to see him. He was up last night and kicked the moon in the river. He said He may feel a bit better now.
Abe and Margaret were up tonight and took him some-thing to eat. They said He said the craziest things.
Dad said you or Haywood had better come down as soon as you can, for he is just like crazy. Doug says he is going to die, etc.
Must ring off. But you or Haywood or both of you Please come down as soon as you can.
Sue
Excuse the scrib etc.

Susie to Haywood - and the cruel joke

Dear Haywood
Well this is the third letter I've written sence I've heard from you last. Perhaps you are busy.
Doug was up last night again. Dad and he are going fishing tonight I guess. You should hear Doug rave about the fruit he canned. he sure seems proud about it.
I've been having an awful time at school the last two days. but over 1/2 girls have been on my side that Goodness. The new girls that start school and a couple of the others sure make me sore. I wouldn't go to school here another year If I had to walk to Kelso. There is just two girls here that think them-selves so nice and catch every new girl and tell her every thing she can think about. Then they catch me and ask all sorts of "?."
It doesn't take so very much to hurt my feelings anyway.
Ma said for me to tell Prof. and see what he would do But nothing doing.
Dad is still raving about me ditching Earl Sun night.
Am going on a hound and Hare hunt tonight. Hoping to have a good tine.
Excuse the scrib for I write a line or two between

class and have to be in a real hurry.
Well must close, Think about answering real soon.
As ever.
Sue.
When will you be down. Listen. You will no doubt get a letter with Earl's name signed to it. Now don't pay any attention for a couple of little devilish freshies found your add on my tablet and thought they'd do some thing smart.
Three girls quit school to-day. Prop insulted them just they way he did a bunch of us last yr.
Ans real soon.

Sat
Dear Haywood
Recieved your letter of the 23rd.
Was sure suprised. I showed the letter to Mamma and we are going over town in the morning to Francis's Edmunds mother for I am quite sure he wrote it. He took your add. off a tablet I had at school and said he was going to write to you and sign Earl's name. Then I wrote and told you you might get a letter with Earl's name signed to it. Not to pay any attention to it
for some freshie had gotten your add. But I didn't think he would write or if he did had no idea it would be that kind of a letter. Ma is sure sore but she doesn't really know what to do because Mrs. Ed. says Frances never wrote it Dad would take her side of course. Anything to hurt me. and drop it.
Do you believe I wrote it Haywood? Well if you do I know I never. If I'm not in one lot of H.-- I'm into another it seems. I am going to show this to Eva and I'll bet a nickle it

Susie to Haywood

Burg.
Dearest Haywood
I suppose you were thinking I never was going to write you But we have been awfully busy the last week. The men are all out at camps. And there's is quite a bit to be done.
I have had an awfully sore throat the last four days but is all right now.
Mrs Ott went up to the depot to meet some company from Tacoma and Centralia and I must not write long.
I sent away for me a coat and hat[.] coat $22.98 and hat $6.00. When I get my pay here I have to get me a pair of arch supporters. For my feet just ache when I am on them all day. I should have had them two yrs ago when I worked in the in the hotel, but Dad said it was all nonsence.
Well Doug is out on his farm and haven't seen him sence Thanksgiving
But I heard from Margaret that the Hinkle kids found his ___. If it is the truth, he is a great deal smarter than Dunbar if he is a knot head.
What was this you were going to tell me when I got over my mad spell? (I'm over.) Any way I wasn't mad. Just awfully, awfully busy.
Well must close for this time. Write real soon and I will try and write sooner.
With Love and Kisses
Sue
