obituary of Kittie Shay's mother
"Mrs. Elizabeth Sanderson passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Irwin, northwest of town, last Sunday. Deceased was a sufferer from abdominal cancer, which ultimately caused her death.
She came here about a month ago from Illinois to make her daughter a visit, and has steadily been failing in health since her arrival. She was born May 10, 1866
Funeral services were held at the Irwin home, northwest of town, at 12 o'clock noon, Monday last, and the body, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Irwin and a sister from Chicago, was shipped to Delavan Illinois, for burial."
As this obituary was clipped from the newspaper long ago, and no note was taken of the date or the name of the newspaper, that information remains a mystery.

LaGrange family stone
The burial place is in lawn 13 at Greenwood Terrace Cemetery 211 N Government Way, Spokane, Washington.
To find the gravesite, follow the road to the second level. On the right side of the road, one can look down onto a gazebo. Just past there, on the left side of the road is the head stone.
LaGrangeCharles W 1845-1931
Carrie O his wife 1845-1918
Fred C 1876-1915
Dorthea 1878-1910
George E 1880-1889
Oscar W 1882-193_ (there is no final digit given on the stone.)
At this posting, 12 May 2009, the office could find no record of Oscar being buried at the cemetery. I contacted Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Everett, knowing that Oscar and his wife, Anna, had lived in that city and there is an Oscar W. LaGrange buried there. However, I am informed that this Oscar's wife's name is "Cora" He was born August 3, 1883 and died June 5, 1957. The husband of Anna Rhode, with whom I am interested, listed on his draft registration a birthdate of 3 Aug 1882. During the 1920 US census taken in Everett, WA, a widowed "Chas W", born about 1846 in England was living with his son and daughter-in-law, Oscar and Anna.
Up-date: I have been informed that Oscar was married twice. His second wife was Cora, so this is the right one.
Fred has a second stone. On it, the birth and death dates are given: Jan 9, 1876 - Aug 2, 1915. Also an inscription,
"May his soul rest in peace again"

Raymond Comodore Samuel Remington Lewallen

Raymond Comodore Lewallen, went by the name of Joe. He was adopted by Alfred J. Wenrich and Minnie Wenrich in 1904 after his mother Malinda passed away. His name was changed at some time to Joseph Alfred Wenrich. He always kept in touch with all his brothers and sisters.
His adopted parents, Alfred and Minnie, are buried in Weiser, ID.
Question: This man is referred to on his adoption records as "Samuel R.",and his great-niece tells me she knew him as "Raymond Comodore". The reseacher, now deceased, who compiled much of the history that was passed on to me listed his name "Raymond Comodore Samuel Remington Lewallen" but didn't record where she found that information. I do not have documentation of his full name.

Oregonian 5 Feb 1908
Helms -- At 958 E Couch, Lucy Edith Helms, a native of Washington, aged 7 years, 3 months, 5 days.
blogger's note: I called the funeral home and they confirmed that Lucy's mother was named Hannah and born in Cleveland, and the father was born in Shawnee county. My research found he was born in Kansas of which there is a Shawnee county.
Mystery: Are the Helms who are buried near Lucy her grandparents?
Thank you, Russell Aldridge of Metro in Portland, for the picture. Mr. Aldridge told me that there seems to be a foundation stone for a monument in Lucy's spot, and that the monument probably was destroyed in a series of vandalism which occurred in the early 1900's.
Thank you Lora Carter, for the picture of Andrew's grave. Andrew's birthdate, calculated using the age and death date given here, would be 30 Mar 1849.

Louilla Lewallen? Whose is she?
1900 US Federal Census lists Anna Lewallen (b May 1834) living with her son James (b Jan 1871) and five-year-old granddaughter Gertrude (b. June 1894). Anna reports that she is the mother of 13 children, 6 of whom are living. Somehow I have Louilla Lewallen (no dates) among fourteen children of Anna and Walter Davis Lewallen. I don't think Louilla belongs but I don't know to whom she belongs, and I don't want to erase her altogether until I can place her with her family.

Will the real Vallie please step forward?
I have a question about a child I have listed for William Jasper and Malinda Young Lewallen. According to the pedigree that was given to me, Vallie Lewallen is the ninth child of William and Malinda. She died in her first year. However, her year of birth and death is 1909. That is six years after Malinda died.
Vallie is also listed in my records as a daughter of Abraham and Dolly Umiker. This Vallie also was born and died in 1909, one of four of their children who died young. (See my post "Abraham and Dolly's infant children" dated August 12)
I am more likely to believe Vallie was a Umiker, based on the dates of the parents. However, Hubbard-Whittle Cemetery lists Vallie Lewallen
Could it be there really are two Vallie's who were born and died in 1909?
Updated: 6 Dec 2008
I found this :
Valley Mary Umiker
Death date: 11 Oct 1909
place: Castle Rock, Cowlitz, Washington
Age at Death: 5 months 16 days
Estimated birth year: 1909
Father name: Abe Umiker
Mother name: Rhoda
Hubbard Funeral Home (contacted 5 Jan 2009) says the child who died 11 Oct 1909 is five-month-old "Dolly Mar Umiker"
Update: The name "Vallie Lewallen" is on a card in the cemetery's records stating that Susie Mae Umiker Lewallen was buried with her sister. It is possible that the mix-up occurred then, giving the married name of the young Susie to her sister as well.

Abraham and Dolly's infant children
From a letter from my grandmother:
Dear Terri,
. . .I called Lois (daughter of Abraham and Dolly's daughter, Doris Cunningham) and she said Ralph was a small son of my grandfather Abraham and Dolly Bertha (Rhody Umiker). He died as a small child. . .
Lois said some of Grandma and Grandfather's children was buried at Spirit Lake. I don't know if the Mt. covered the cemetery or not. . .
An e-mail from Lois forwarded to me by my grandmother:
. . . Grandma Umiker had 4 babies that died.
They were--Ralph born Dec. 20, 1905--died Mar. 20, 1906
Vallie--born April 24, 1909--died Oct. 9, 1909
Henry--born Jan. 16, 1913--died Mar. 21,1914
and Aaron you already have. If TerriLyn has any more questions--give her my e-mail address. . .
Author's note: In spite of repeated e-mail's nobody seems to know anything about Aaron.

Elizabeth Ankert and her parents
The names on the deed include Dolly Rhode Umiker, Doris Umiker, Herbert Melton, Tobias Rhode, Maud Drake Rhode, Alfred J. Golden, Louise Rhode Lee, Fred Lee, Oscar LaGrange, Anna LaGrange, Herman Rhode, Henry Rhode, Charles Rhode, and Hannah Rhode Helms (widow)
I found Elizabeth Ankert age 9 listed with the family of Philip and Mary A. Howser on the 1860 Census at Independence, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Also listed was a seven-year-old girl, Dianthy Gallough. Elizabeth was still with them in the same location at age 17. This time another girl, 8-year-old Emma Johnson, was with them. Elizabeth's parents are noted as being foreign born; Elizabeth was born in Ohio.
"I found the confirmation listing of Maria Elisabeth Ankert, whose parents were Daniel Ankert and Maria Ankert. It was as you indicated in your letter, 5 April 1868. She was born 11 March 1853."
Question, what happened to Elizabeth's parents and what is her connection to the Housers?
