Susie Umiker married Louis Schleicher
From an e-mail sent to me by Annette Allen:
"I have no real documentation, just family stories and pictures. I am attaching a picture of the Schleicher Family with my grandmother and aunt.
"In front are Susie and Louis Schleicher, behind them is Alice Schleicher and her brother, Albert William Schleicher. Holding on to Louis's arm, is my grandmother, Mae Zulauf. Next to Mae is Emil Schleicher. Next to Emil is my Aunt Velva Zulauf. The boy is Kevin Arnold Frenzel, Alice's son. My Aunt Velva is now 81, so I'm guessing the picture was taken when she was about 11, which would be around 1927.
"Alice Schleicher Frenzel and Emil Schleicher are the children of Louis and Susie Umiker Schleicher. Kevin Frenzel (the young boy in the photo) is the son of Alice and her husband Hans Reinhold Walter Frenzel. They are related to my grandmother, Mae Zulauf, through her husband, Albert Zulauf, who is my grandfather. Albert's mother was Anna Maria 'Mary' Wernli, who was the oldest daughter of Susanna Wernli, b 1839, who was the sister of Anna Maria 'Mary' Wernli, b 1832, who married Samuel Umiker, b 1834, who were the parents of Susanna 'Susie' Umiker Schleicher (1865-1946).
"Emil Louis Schleicher was born May 14, 1891 in Fort Townsend, Washington, and died in Seattle on September 28, 1958. He never married. Their next child, was named Arnold Schleicher. He was born March 28, 1893, in Castle Rock, and died August 29, 1894 in Castle Rock. Their third child was named Albert William Schleicher and was born July 3, 1896 in Castle Rock and died September 3, 1962 in Seattle. He married Anna Larsen, who died in 1938. Albert and Ann had four children: Lester, Audrey, Merton (1922-1940), and Eunice (1926-1997). I do not know if any of their children ever married. Susie and Louis Schleicher's fourth child was a girl, Alice Mary Schleicher, born February 4, 1902 in Castle Rock, and died December 24, 1990 in Seattle. Hans was born in Germany July 16, 1896, and died in a boating accident on July 5, 1949 in Seattle, Washington. They had one son Kevin Arnold Frenzel, who was born February 23, 1936 in Seattle.
"I am tied into this family in two ways. My father, James Wm Flintoft, was the son of Lena Wernli Flintoft, who was the youngest daughter of Susanna Wernli (the sister of Mary Wernli who married Samuel Umiker) My dad was very close to Alice and Emil as long as they were alive. Yes, my father was the cousin of my grandfather Albert Zulauf.
"The Wernli's immigrated in 1861. Jakob (1821-1905) located in Highland, Illinois. Anna Maria 'Mary' married Samuel Umiker and located the the Toutle area. Heinrich located in Texas; Susanna in Seattle. The others I haven't been able to trace.

Birkenstock Funeral Service Held Sunday
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Hubbard Funeral home for Fred Birkenstock, who passed away on Christmas Day [1933]. The funeral service was in charge of the Masonic lodge, Reverend H.J. Harding, chaplain of the order, leading in prayer. Both the chapel service and gravside service were conducted by George Mackrell, acting master. Members of the Eagles, K. of P. and Masonic lodges attended the funeral in a body. Music was sung by Ralph Dykeman accompanied by Mrs. Howard Lum.
Interment was at the Whittle cemetery. John Slade, Willis Dykeman, Dwight

Mrs. Tucker Called by Death Saturday
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon [2 Jan 1934] by Reverend C.B. Osgood for Mrs. Elizabeth "Grandma" Tucker, who died Saturday, December 30 [1933] at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Effie Hill following an extended illness. The funeral service was held at the Christian church with the Nat Smith funeral home of Kelso in charge. Music for the service was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of C.B. Osgood, J.K. Conger, Mrs. C.N. Miller and Mrs. H. Beck, accompanied by Mrs. James Price. Interment was at the Whittle cemetery.
Elizabeth Adeline Kinman was born on June 12, 1846, in Milton, Illinois and, July 4, 1860 was married to William W. Tucker of that city. Four years later the family moved to Oregon, settling near Silverton. In 1884 they moved to Washington, settling in the Scantygrease district west of Castle Rock where Mr. Tucker took up a homestead. In 1898 they moved to Castle Rock where they have since resided save for four years spent in Oregon during the war. Mr. Tucker passed away just thirteen years ago.
Surviving are three sons and three daughters, J.L. Tucker of Portland, Sarah Crampton of Onalaska, Mrs. Amanda Watkins, Mrs. Effie Hill and Warren Tucker, all of Castle Rock, and William Tucker of San Francisco.
Pallbearers had been named by Mrs. Tucker before her death. They included J.K. Conger, A.D. Little, Dan Delameter, Elmer Gary, W. Blanchard and Abe Umiker.
Among out-of-town persons attending the funeral were: J.L. Tucker, Portland; Mrs. Sarah Crampton, Onalaska; Mr. and Mrs. Allen Foster; Roland Bourland, Centralia; Mrs. Conkil, Raymond; Robert Bateson, Longview, J.H. Crampton, Onalaska, Mrs. Liona Anderson and children, Ray and Bobby, Seattle; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Larson, Onalaska; Mrs. Shirwood, Onalaska; and Mr. and Mrs. Clark Fenton, Silver Lake.

Birkenstock Funeral Service Held Sunday
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Hubbard Funeral home for Fred Birkenstock, who passed away on Christmas Day [1933]. The funeral service was in charge of the Masonic lodge, Reverend H.J. Harding, chaplain of the order, leading in prayer. Both the chapel service and gravside service were conducted by George Mackrell, acting master. Members of the Eagles, K. of P. and Masonic lodges attended the funeral in a body. Music was sung by Ralph Dykeman accompanied by Mrs. Howard Lum.
Interment was at the Whittle cemetery. John Slade, Willis Dykeman, Dwight

Cunningham and Huntington will each install a motor for tunning all the farm and household contrivances usually operated by man-power. While the power is running the milking machine, washingt machine, churn, etc. the time saved can be utilized for other work. Farm help is scarce and some of the farmers have been running their tractors at night, having a day and night shift.

Castle Rock, Wash. Dec 31 - (Special) - Yesterday afternoon the family of Jacob Umiker, residing near Tuttle, this county, came to town, bringing a very sick child with them, which was found to be dangerously ill with diphtheria. Everything possible was done for the little sufferer, but he died in a few hours after reaching here. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Umiker, at whose home the little one died, had planned to celebrate their golden wedding this evening, but joy has turned into mourning. The other members of the family are under quarantine, and it is feared that the mother is coming down with the dread malady.

A short story of Uncle Andy Lewallen. He was a brother of John W Lewallen
A. R. Lewallen was the son of William D. Lewallen who was the son of Andrew Lewallen who was the son of Anderson Lewallen.
A. R. Lewallen was born in Scott county, Tennessee. July 17, 1849. He moved with his family to Rock Creek, Wayne County, Kentucky and later the family moved back to Scott County, Tenn. In 1865. He married Nancy ? in 1868. He and his wife raised eleven children of their own and took in seven other children at different times making the sum total of eighteen children in all.
Uncle Andy served as Justice of Peace in Morgan County Tenn. for 20 years and four years as Justice of Peace in Scott County, Tenn. He filled the office of Chairman of the County Court of Morgan County, Tenn. for two 1/2 (sic) years. Andy Practiced law before the lower courts of Scott, Morgan, Fentress County for 20 years. Uncle Andy joined the free Masons in 1873 and was affiliated with them ever since. He served as Master of the Lodge for ten or twelve years. He was a Master Mason for nearly 56 years.
To the union of Andy and Nancy Lewallen were born the following children.

He was a member of the Methodist church from 1867. on He served as a member of the Committee who built the Court House at Waartburg and his name is engraved in gold letters on a slab at that building. Uncle Andy passed away some time ago. He was a leading figure in law and order of that section of Tenn.
