Abe Umiker Passes Away Here Sunday -- Pioneer Of This District Coming to Castle Rock in 1888, Funeral Is Held Wednesday --
Abraham Umiker, 75, passed away Sunday at his home on the west side after an illness of two weeks. He had been in poor health for several months, suffering from cancer of the stomach. He was a pioneer and old-time resident of Castle Rock, having settled here in 1888, and was a member of the Masonic lodge and of the Grange. He was born in Switzerland June 15, 1860 and came to this country in 1882.
He was married in 1903 to Dolly Rhody of Castle Rock, who survives him. Other survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Dan Sowders, of Longview, Dorothy and Doris, twins, at home; two sons, Abraham and Charles, also at home; a brother, Jake Umiker, of St. Helens; a sister Mrs. Louis Schleicher, of Seattle; four nieces, eight nephews and several grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Susie Lewallen, died six years ago.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 o'clock in the Hubbard Chapel and were conducted by Rev. Ernest Moore, of the Full Gospel Mission, who also sang two songs. Interment was in the family plot in the Whittle cemetery, where the Masons were in charge of the graveside services. Pall-bearers were Judge J. E Stone of Kelso, W.W. Wren, F. R. Ruth, L.J. Ryan, M.E. Normand and Arthur Dohlman.
