Death of Walter Emerson Umiker

Death ruled accident
The death of Walter Umiker of 4945 - 47 A Avenue March 8 was deemed accidental at the inquest held March 20 at Ladner.
Dr R.N. Anderson was coroner and jurymen were Alvin Conner, Vernon Naismith, Sidney Jones, Harold Harris, Glenn Buckley, Ronald Holman and Norman Chapman.
The jury ruled the death was the result of injuries suffered when Mr. Umiker was run over by a Continental Explosives truck driven by James Grant.
No blame was laid on anyone by the jury.

Walter Umiker killed by moving explosives truck
Walter E. Umiker, 4945 - 47A Avenue, died about 8:30 p.m. March 8 when a Continental Explosives Ltd. truck backed (crossed out and "front end" written in) over him.
Mr. Umiker and James Grant, 4604-46A St., had just finished unloading explosives from the truck at the company magazine on 60th Avenue.
Mr. Grant found Mr. Umiker lying on the ground under the truck.
An inquest was opened by Dr. R.N. Anderson, Delta coroner, on March 10. The body was viewed and then released for burial. The inquest will resume on March 21.
Jurymen are Alvin G. Conner, Vernon Naismith, Sidney A. Jones, Harold Harris, Glen Buckley, Ronald Holman and Norman Chapman.
Corporal Don MacDonald of Delta police is in charge of the investigation.
Mr. Umiker is survived by his wife; one son, John, of Racine, Wisconsin; two grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. S. McNeil of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. E. West of Olympia, Wash., and one brother, Von Umiker of Seattle.
Funeral services were held at Delta Funeral Chapel March 14, his birthday, with Rev. George Morrison of Ladner United Church officiating. Cremation followed.
Mr. Umiker is a past president of the Kinsmen Club of Ladner and a member of Delta Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
For many years he was in the garage business in Ladner and was best known as the operator of Ferry Service Garage, which later became Bishop Motors and then Pashleigh Motors.
While he was in business he was an active member of Delta Board of Trade and was an early member of the Ladner Businessmen's Association. He was an active member of the Ladner Lions' Club, and past president of Delta Parks Board.
Born in the state of Washington March 14, 1900, he came to Alberta in 1919. He married Edna Boughen of Vancouver March 13, 1929, and he came to Ladner in 1932.
Mr. Umiker was semi-retired and had worked part-time at Delta Sales and Service Store for the last few years.
Mrs. Umiker was visiting her son and daughter-in-law at Racine when the accident occured, and she returned with her son Saturday.
James Grant, the driver of the truck, was taken to Vancouver General Hospital Saturday evening, suffering from shock, and the police report he is progressing satisfactorily

Truck Victim Identified
Delta-- Police have identified a 67-year-old man killed by a truck here Wednesday night as Walter Umiker, of 4945 47A Ave. Delta.
Umiker, was working as a swamper on a truck at the storage plant of Continental Explosives Ltd., 60th Avenue and 68th Street, when he was run over by the truck as it backed up.
An inquest will open tonight in magistrate's court in Ladner.
The accident occurred while Umiker's wife was vacationing in Racine, Wis.

Survived by his loving wife Edna; 1 son John, Racine, Wis.; 2 grandsons, Gregory and Leonard; 2 sisters, Mrs. S. McNeil, Seattle; Mrs. E. West, Olympia, Wash.; 1 brother, Von, Seattle. Rev. R. G. A. Morrison will conduct the funeral service Tuesday, March 14 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of DELTA FUNERAL HOME, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road. Cremation. No flowers by request.
